New York’s New Law is Great News for Freelancers

AllWork Freelancers Act

There’s some great news this week for freelancers in New York! A new law, the Freelance Isn’t Free Act, was just passed that punishes business for not creating a clear timeline and procedure for paying their freelancers. Employers can no longer withhold wages, change wages after work has been completed, or withhold wages after the agreed upon deadline. If caught, a business can be hit with a $25,000 fine.

This new law impacts more than a million New Yorkers who are freelancers or independent contractors who rely on this money as their full-time earnings. According to The Daily News, 70% of freelancers report either not getting paid or having to wait months for their money for jobs — and the missing money adds up to $6,390 for the average independent worker. Imagine not being paid almost $7,000 from your current employer, you certainly wouldn’t stand for it and now neither will freelancers.
